What to wear to the beach if i dont have a bathing suit?

my familys going to the beach for the 4th, but my mom wont buy us bathing suits since it will be one day. and i dont have any that fit me. sooooo im planning on wearing dark short shorts. but what kind of shirt should i wear? i dont i have any good tank tops. would a regular tshirt work?
